How to dodge a call
Not a good time?
Rather than straight up declining the call, let them down gently using this neat little trick: call forwarding.
In activating this function, all incoming phone calls will automatically be directed to voicemail.
Simply dial *#21# to activate it – then when you’re ready to talk, turn it off by dialling the same number.
Find out how much signal you’ve got
Your handset’s showing you’ve got a couple of blobs of signal, but your call quality is pretty poor?
There’s a way of finding out exactly how strong your connection is – and it doesn’t involve stretching your arm out of the window towards the sky.
All you have to do is type in the code *3001#12345#* and press call.
This launches the device’s Field Mode, a secret series of menus which is normally reserved for developers.
Next, try holding down your handset’s power button until the ‘slide to power off’ option appears.
Then press your phone’s home button until the home screen reappears and behold your signal newly displayed as a number.
If you’ve got a score around -50, you’re in luck and should have no problem streaming until your heart’s content.
However, a score in the region of -120 and you’ll be lucky if your Whatsapp is connecting.
Hide your number
If you’re ringing someone you’d rather didn’t have your number – PPI, anyone? – there’s a way of preserving your anonymity.
Typing in #31# before the number of the person you’re calling will hide your digits for that conversation.
If you’re really private, entering *#31# blocks your number from showing on all outgoing calls.
Find out your phone’s IMEI
If you’ve ever changed networks or reported your phone lost or stolen, you’ll be familiar with having to dig out its IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
To save you spending hours scrolling through the Settings app looking for it, simply type in *#06#.
The code will instantly appear on the screen.
Activate call waiting
Ever been sitting by your phone waiting for that all-important call when someone else rings you?
If you’re worried you might miss the person you really want to speak to, activate your iPhone’s call waiting feature.
Again, to save you a scroll through the Settings, there’s a secret shortcut code.
Type in *43# and press call.
From then on, you’ll be notified if a second call is coming in while you’re nattering on the first and be given the option to answer the new one immediately.
To turn it off, simply dial #43#.
