JAPAN SUCCEEDS IN HAVING ALL POKESTOPS REMOVED FROM HIROSHIMA ATOMIC BOMB MEMORIAL PARK

All the Pokemon Go stations have been removed from the atomic bomb memorial park in Hiroshima, the city said as it marked the 71st anniversary of the U.S. attack on Saturday.

The local government had asked Niantic Inc, the developer of the augmented-reality game, to remove the Pokestops and other virtual sites that appeared in the Peace Memorial Park and its facilities, saying that having people come and play the smartphone game there is inappropriate.

Now no Pokemon characters show up in the area. “We are really grateful that they responded promptly,” a Hiroshima official said.

The Japanese unit of California-based Niantic informed the city of the change of settings earlier in the day, the official said.

On Friday the city of Nagasaki, which also suffered a U.S. atomic bombing in August 1945, said it seems that Niantic removed Pokestops from the Nagasaki Peace Park ahead of a memorial service on Tuesday, as requested by the municipal government.

The game app was launched late last month in Japan after sparking a frenzy in other countries. But it has also caused social problems such as users trespassing or driving while playing it.

Japanese railway firms and nuclear power plant operators among others have also requested the developer to make sure the Pokemon characters do not appear in areas they believe are inappropriate or where it is dangerous to play.
